EP 349: Crafting a New Glow with Giovanna of PDO Max

This may be a podcast all about spa marketing and business growth, but want to know the *real* secret behind successful spa marketing made easy?

Having products and treatments you’re excited to offer and can’t help but share!

And while I’m no longer in the treatment room, I’ll never stop nerding out on new aesthetics technologies, devices and products, which is why I had to bring Giovanna McCarthy, founder of PDO Max on to the show.

In January 2020, PDO Max became one of a few companies who had a fully FDA-cleared PDO thread-in-cannula device, which offers one of the least invasive products to help reposition sagging skin while also stimulating collagen and elastin production to give patients defined features while maintaining a more naturally youthful look.

Giovanna is a visionary entrepreneur with over 30 years in the aesthetics industry and I can’t wait for you to learn more about her incredible products PDO AfterGlo™ serum and Glowpin™ multi-needle stimulator as well as glean insights from an entrepreneur with an extensive track record of continuously staying ahead of the curve in the aesthetic industry.

In this episode, we discuss:

  •  Why it’s important for aestheticians to stay abreast of new technologies and treatments, even if they’re outside of their defined scope of practice
  • How threads work within the skin and the opportunity Giovanna saw in translating the benefits and technology of threads into a non-invasive product
  • The ins and outs of the PDO Max AfterGlo™ serum and Glowpin™ – how it works within the skin and how it can be utilized within your aesthetic practice
  • Answers to common questions aesthetic practitioners have about offering PDO Max AfterGlo™ serum and Glowpin™

Now that we’re approaching Quarter 4 and looking to the year ahead, you might be planning your yearly promotions and other revenue-generating activities, and I’ve got a question for you…

Do you have ecommerce on your plan?

If not, you should! Yes, ecommerce had a big boom back in 2020 (maybe you hopped on that train, but now you’ve been hanging out in the station once your spa got back up and running), but whether you ever ventured in to ecommerce or not, it has a massive potential for being your biggest revenue generator and profit maximizer in 2024.

Tune in to this episode as I discuss how to think about the opportunities ecommerce presents as a Spa CEO and the first steps in getting started, or ramping your online shop back up.

    In this episode, I cover:

    • Why spas and aesthetic experts have a huge advantage in the ecommerce arena and how to leverage it
    • The breakdown of numbers you need to bring in $100K through your ecommerce revenue stream
    • The tools and softwares you want to have working for you so that ecommerce works as your spa’s 24/7 profit machine
    • The major marketing keys you need to unlock consistent sales

EP 344: Knowing When to DIY or Hire Out Your Marketing with Ryan Files of High Level Marketing

Outsourcing and delegation will always be one of my top recommendations for Spa CEOs who need to step further into their role as the leader of their company and to free up their time and energy to focus on their business’ bigger picture objectives.

However, not every item on your to-do list needs to be hired out, in fact, there’s a time and a place for DIY, which is what Ryan and I are discussing in this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy.

Back for his third interview with us, Ryan Files is the the Vice President of Sales with High Level Marketing and has worked with hundreds of individual practices on their marketing and SEO efforts from spas to dermatologists and plastic surgeons,as well as aesthetic manufacturers such as BTL, Rohrer Aesthetics, PDO Max, Emage Medical, and The Salt Facial.

Listen in as we talk about what marketing activities are best left to be completed in-house versus hiring out.

                In this episode, we discuss:

                • What low-hanging fruit items are ideal for spa owners to do themselves or keep within their team’s responsibilities
                • Why the tasks Ryan recommends DIY-ing are vital to helping forge strong relationships with your existing and potential clientele
                • The roles social media and your website play in your overall branding and the experience you create for your audience
                • The distinguished difference between driving traffic organically versus using paid media and what to consider when hiring an outside company to help take some of these marketing tasks off your plate

EP 343: Checking In with Freedom In Action Grant Winner Juvy Cabanilla

If you’ve been listening to my podcast over the past year, you’ve probably heard me talk about the Freedom In Action Grant

We launched this grant in partnership with the Liberté Foundation for Women in July of 2022.

Since its inception, we’ve been fortunate to give away three $10,000 grants to women owned businesses in the spa industry.

We still have two more $10,000 grant opportunities that we will give away in late 2023 and in 2024.

The second winner awarded in November 2022 was Juvy Cabanilla, owner of Skincare Maui in Hawaii.

On today’s episode, I catch up with Juvy to hear about how she’s used the grant money in her business.

Juvy is an esthetician, licensed massage therapist, mom of two, and she’s taught 22 years in the Hawaii public schools and is currently a Resource Teacher mentoring first and second year teachers.

                  In this episode, we discuss:

                  • Being a single mom and how this grant came at the perfect time for her business
                  • Juvy’s application process creating her winning video submission

EP 341: Learn All About Starting an Ecom Business from Gamal Codner

A wise friend once said to me “spa owners are in the confidence business.”

Seems like a heavy weight to carry, but when you think about it, our clients view us as problem solvers where our solutions help build their self-confidence.

This has stuck with me as a reminder that the spa industry relies heavily on relationship building with clients.

With that in mind, the concept of selling your own private skincare label is a natural fit for three reasons:

                      1. A clientele base that knows, likes, and trusts you is already in place
                      2. You are educating about home skincare regimens after every treatment
                      3. Adding an e-commerce stream of revenue would be low maintenance as the principles are already in place in the form of retail at your spa

My guest on today’s episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast is one of only 90 official Shopify & Amazon-verified coaches in the world who shares the in’s and out’s of how to get your e-commerce business started.

Gamal Codner started, scaled & sold his 7-figure e-commerce brand in under 4 years.  Before that, he raised ~$10M+ and has had 9 successful business transactions totaling over $50 million while working in M&A.

After selling his brand, he decided to start a coaching program with his wife that teaches his new way of running a brand, that helps e-commerce founders turn their lifestyle businesses into desirable 7-figure businesses people want to buy.

The program is kind of like an online MBA for e-commerce brands that learn how to scale with marketing, cash flow, and operation systems. With a focus on optimizing for simplicity, profits, and enjoyment of life.

                      In this episode, we discuss:

                      • Some of the biggest challenges business owners face launching an ecom brand
                      • One differentiation that sets ecom businesses apart
                      • The blueprint Gamal developed after solving his own negative cash flow management
                      • Three main costs associated with starting an e-commerce brand
                      • The reason an e-commerce business would be a natural fit for spas
                      • The 3 most important steps you need to take to begin

Figuring out insurance coverage for your business can feel like a daunting task because not all businesses are set up equally.

Not to mention the confusing language and overwhelming amount of options you have to decide what’s necessary for your business.

It’s not a very glamorous Spa CEO task.

But, it’s a necessary one that you can’t avoid forever.

My guest on this week’s episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast takes the guesswork out of selecting insurance for spa owners.

Andy Zarkovich is an independent insurance agent and a spa owner who is currently enrolled in my program, Growth Factor Framework.

He’s created a full Spa Insurance Overview document where he reviews the different types of carriers or providers, goes over policy terms, and the details of each coverage to give you the full scope of what insurance coverage you consider for your spa.

                      In this episode, we discuss:

                      • Ways to mitigate risk in your spa business
                      • Adding an insurance agent to your circle of business advisors

As a lover of systems, spreadsheets, and a well planned out calendar, I realize that the roadmap we set out for ourselves doesn’t always reach the planned destination.

That’s why I constantly call entrepreneurship a rollercoaster.

Navigating the ebbs and flow of business and life and trusting that the universe has your back is something my guest on today’s episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast is familiar with.

Elayne Mendoza is a Growth Factor Framework member who is the founder of a latina owned beauty business named Moonlyte Studio.

She recently led our Women’s Circle event as part of the Spa CEO Intensive, which prompted us to sit down and discuss how the moment she said “YES!” to the opportunity to facilitate breathwork and meditation ceremonies has shifted her entrepreneurial journey into a new phase beyond her beauty services.

Whether you’re feeling stuck in your journey or happily progressing along, this episode is a great listen for everyone as a reminder that nothing is ever set in stone.

                      In this episode, we discuss:

                      • Seizing the opportunities that are presented to us
                      • Accepting who you are meant to be
